Frequently Asked Questions

Finding the right counselor is an important decision. Below you will find answers to common questions about my practice, scheduling, and what you can expect from our work together.

About the Practice & Approach

What services do you offer?

I provide individualized mental health counseling, including support for stress, emotional challenges, relationship issues, and personal growth. Additionally, I offer specialized secular palliative care counseling for individuals and families facing serious illnesses or end-of-life situations.

Who is the counselor?

My name is Adam Clark. I am a mental health counselor with nearly two decades of experience supporting individuals across various ages and backgrounds, both in Japan and internationally. My background also includes roles in adventure-based counseling, experiential education, and organizational development.

What is your counseling approach?

My approach emphasizes a personalized path to mental health care, focusing on self-discovery, resilience, and lasting well-being. I integrate principles of mindfulness, trauma-informed care, and unconditional positive regard to create a safe, non-judgmental space for clients.

What types of clients do you work with?

I work with English-speaking adolescents, adults, and families seeking support for a range of concerns. Via teleconferencing, I am able to support people on a global scale, but my practice is primarily oriented toward international residents, international families, and individuals navigating cross-cultural and life transitions in Japan.

What age ranges do you work with?

For general counseling, I typically support individuals from age 10 up to approximately 55. However, when providing palliative and end-of-life support, I am honored to work with adults of all ages.

Do you offer support for serious illnesses or end-of-life situations?

Yes, I provide secular palliative care counseling, focusing on individuals and their families facing serious illnesses or approaching end-of-life. This service aims to address emotional, psychological, and existential aspects to foster inner peace and acceptance.

What is your stance on social justice and inclusion?

I am committed to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Belonging (DEIJB). My mission involves actively addressing systemic barriers and advocating for justice, especially concerning ethnicity, sexuality, gender, and class. I strive to incorporate social justice principles into my counseling practice and daily life.

Sessions, Location & Scheduling

What can I expect in the first session?

The first session is a free 20-minute consultation designed to explore your concerns, discuss your goals, and determine whether my counseling approach is the right fit for you. It’s a chance to ask any questions and decide how we might move forward.

How can I schedule an appointment?

You can book your initial consultation directly through the Scheduling & Booking page to view live availability.

Are initial consultations online or in person?

Initial consultations are held online via Google Meet by default. When I confirm your appointment, you’ll receive a Google Meet link.

Do you offer online counseling?

Yes, I provide both in-person and online sessions. Online counseling is a flexible option for clients who prefer the convenience of meeting remotely, especially those living outside of Yokohama or with busy schedules.

Where are you located?

I am based in Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan. In-person sessions take place in a private office located on the Yokohama International School (YIS) campus in Yamate, which is about 15 minutes from both Ishikawacho and Motomachi-Chukagai Stations.

How long do counseling sessions last?

A typical counseling session lasts 60 minutes, but session length can be adjusted based on individual needs. Some clients prefer shorter or longer sessions depending on their goals and comfort level.

How often should I schedule sessions?

The frequency of sessions depends on your needs and situation. Some clients prefer weekly sessions, while others find that biweekly or monthly sessions work best for them. This is something we can discuss and adjust as needed.

Fees, Insurance & Contact

What are your counseling fees?

My fee is ¥10,000 for a standard 60-minute appointment. The initial 20-minute consultation is always completely free of charge.

Do you accept insurance?

At this time, I do not bill insurance directly. However, I can provide a payment receipt that you can submit to your insurance provider for potential reimbursement. Coverage varies, so it’s a good idea to check with your provider about their policies regarding out-of-network mental health services. Many plans offer reimbursement for a set number of counseling sessions per year (typically 10–24), and my fee is generally within the standard per-session allowance. If you will need a payment receipt, please let me know during our first free consultation.

How can I contact you for more information?

For additional inquiries, feel free to email me at info@yokohamamentalhealth.com. You can also call +81 (0)70-2183-2253. If I am in session and unable to answer, please leave a message or follow up via email and I will get back to you promptly.

What should I do if I need urgent mental health support?

If you are in crisis or need immediate support, I strongly encourage you to reach out to a local emergency service or mental health crisis hotline (such as TELL Japan at 03-5774-0992). While I provide ongoing counseling support, my private practice is not a 24/7 crisis intervention service.
